Melanie Lynskey

 

Melanie Jayne Lynskey was born on May 16th, 1977 in New Zealand. Her work is known for its portrayals of complex women and her knowledge of American dialects, she works predominantly in independent films. Lynskey has been the recipient of two Critics' Choice Awards, as well as an HCA Award and a Gracie. She also won a New Zealand Film Award and a Hollywood Film Award.





 Her screen debut came in Heavenly Creatures (1994), in which she was awarded an award called a New Zealand Film Award as her performance of Pauline Parker, a teenage murderess. In the following years, she was in a variety of international productions such as Ever After (1998), Detroit Rock City, But I'm a Cheerleader The Cherry Orchard, Snakeskin (2001), Shooters, Abandon, Sweet Home Alabama (2/22/02). After her move to the United States, Lynskey became known as a character actor, gaining recognition for a combination of small-budget and big-budget films, including Shattered Glass (2003), Flags of Our Fathers (2006), Away We Go, Up in the Air, The Informant!, Leaves of Grass (all 2009), Win Win (2011) Looking for the Friend to the The End of the World, The Perks of Being a Wallflower (both 2012) and They Came Together (2014), and Don't look up (2021).





 Lynskey was nominated for a Gotham Award in 2012 for her role as a depressed divorcee in Hello I Must Be Going. This was a major change in her career. Her subsequent roles in The Big Ask (2013) and Happy Christmas, We’ll Never Have Paris (all 2014), The Intervention (all 2016), Rainbow Time, Little Boxes (2016), I Don't Feel at Home In This World Anymore (both 2017), Sadie (2018) and Lady of the Manor (2021) made her known as a prominent figure within the American independent film industry.
